labpic Peking University and Yale University have established The Peking-Yale Joint Center for Plant Molecular Genetics and Agribiotechnology. The first Center Director will be Professor Xing Wang Deng from the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.

Research at the Center will initially be concentrated in the field of basic biology in model plant systems and on the application of this basic research to crop improvement --- an area of great interest and importance both to China and to the United States. The Center also plans to facilitate student and faculty exchanges between Peking University and Yale, providing for extended laboratory and study visits in Beijing and in New Haven by researchers from the two institutions and their students. Under the leadership of a committed faculty from both
universities, and with the advice of an internationally-drawn Scientific Advisory Board, the Center will serve as a model of global scientific partnerships in the field of plant genomics and modern agribiotechnology.

The memorandum was signed in August, 2000, and a formal inauguration ceremony was held when Yale President Richard Levin visited Peking University at May 7th, 2001.
